Who was Al-Jazari?
A heritage that shapes tomorrow
Al-Jazari was a Muslim engineer and inventor who lived in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries CE. He was known for designing devices that combined engineering precision, motion and beauty, from water clocks to water-raising machines and automated devices.
He recorded his inventions in his book The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices (in Arabic, «الجامع بين العلم والعمل النافع في صناعة الحيل»), which he completed in 1206 CE. The word ḥiyal was used here to mean ingenious mechanisms and engineering solutions. In the book he provided drawings and explanations that help the reader understand his devices and how they were built and operated.
Inventions worth discovering
The Elephant Clock
A water clock in the shape of an elephant that combines timekeeping with a sequence of moving mechanical elements, in a design that unites knowledge and beauty.
Water clocks
Devices that use the flow of water to regulate movement and measure the passing of time, including the peacock clock described in his book.
Water-raising machines
Designs that use mechanical motion to lift water, showing his interest in practical solutions for managing a resource essential to life.
A pioneer of automated motion
Al-Jazari developed devices driven by mechanical and water-powered mechanisms, including doors that open automatically within some of his devices, and jugs and machines that pour water and drinks automatically. These designs show his ability to regulate motion and control the flow of liquids to perform specific tasks.
Al-Jazari is regarded as one of the pioneers of mechanical engineering and automated devices; his inventions, drawings and explanations remain an important reference for understanding the history of these technologies and a source of inspiration for engineers and innovators to this day.
Why did we choose his name?
We draw from Al-Jazari the union of knowledge and useful practice: understanding the problem, designing a solution, testing it, and then documenting it so that others can benefit from it and develop it further.
At Digital Al-Jazari Lab, we carry this spirit into the age of digital tools and artificial intelligence. We develop educational games, tools and applied prototypes, and share how they were tested, their limits and their improvements to serve education, research and society.
A heritage that shapes tomorrow: knowledge that becomes experience, and experience that grows into benefit.
